L’arietta: The Three feathers

Croak.

This is my 6th show with L’arietta and they have come such a long way.

For some, opera is an intimidating artform; especially so if you do not have the background nor the exposure to it. Even for someone who has sung in opera choruses, I’m not particularly excited to catch a full Wagnerian opera again.
L’arietta on the other hand, produces one of the easiest entry points to enjoy both the music and drama of opera. Bonus points, you do not have to sit still for ages nor listen to perhaps an unrelatable story sung in a foreign language.

I believe we need to have a conversation about accessibility for classical music in general. However, this does not mean to dumb it down or have long essays in the program booklet to explain what is happening on stage.
Accessibility perhaps means to adapt the art form into something more relatable for audiences. This I reckon, is what L’arietta has excelled for their shows, both in their choice of operas and staging.

Of course, there will always be a time and place for horses and elephants to walk the stage, or for the audience to cry as Senta throws herself off the cliff.
For the rest of us, enjoy the humor, fantastic performance by the entire cast, and the fact that anyone can watch this and enjoy themselves. Who knows, there might be future opera stars and patrons in the audience.

Let the magic begin!

The Three Feathers

Based on a tale by the Brothers Grimm, the opera presents a young female protagonist, Princess Dora, as its hero. A magic feather leads the shy, self-doubting princess to an enchanted Underworld ruled by a giant Frog King. Here she summons her courage and compassion to face a series of mysterious and comic adventures that change her life.
Completing her quest, she saves her father’s kingdom from the plots of her selfish sisters and earns her right to the crown.
