So recently, Nikon posted this status update on their facebook:
A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures! Do any of our facebook fans use any of the NIKKOR lenses? Which is your favorite and what types of situations do you use it for?
It’s pretty controversial. There are over 3000+ comments and 1300+ shares on that one status update alone!
The power of social media…
Many disagree, calling the statement an insult to professionals and posting comments like: “A baker is only as good as his oven’ blablala. Some even suggested switching to other camera brands.
However, I feel those who reacted negatively to the statement are missing the point and I actually agree with Nikon’s statement(:
Before you shoot me, hear me out:
Imagine you are shooting a flower. Same lighting condition, two different lens.
The flower shot by a 50mm Leica/ Mamiya/ Hasselblad lens will be very different from the same flower shot by a Canon 50mm F1.8 given the same lighting conditions. As there is just some floating elements adjustments pixie thingy living inside the Leica/ Mamiya/ Hasselblad lens that makes it worth its gorgeous price tag.
Heck, I can shoot the same flower with a Canon 50mm F1.2 and the Canon 50mm F1.8 and it will give me a very different result!
Reason being, the colour, tones and characteristic of the lens itself will show in the image. When you compare the two images, you are just going to side with the more expensive lens because the quality gives it an extra pop. go google for comparison pictures
Lets face it. I want the 35mm F1.4 because I know that it outperform my 35mm F2 is terms of quality. Put the prints shot by the two lenses side by side and you can tell the difference. Especially when it comes to sharpness, distortion and auto focus..
Although my Canon 5D have no auto focus when it comes to low light situations.
Either ways, we can pixel peep and shoot a brick wall to death but the more expensive lenses are still going to produce images that are superior to the cheaper one. Which is why people even pay for them.
The big BUT comes in here that if the image does not move me, I really don’t care about it. After all, the world has seen its fair share of pretty pictures.
So, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Samsung, Leica, Mamiya, Hasselblad, Hai Oh, iPhone -WHATEVER.
If the image does not move me, then I really could not care less about the lens you are using.
So yea, Nikon has a point. A good lens is essential to taking good photos -only if the image moves me.
Just my artsy rant for the night(:
